Participant wellbeing
Juno classifies wellbeing signals into four graded tiers, with a defined action at each level.
Tier 1 — distress
When a participant shows distress without referring to self-harm, Juno acknowledges it, eases the pressure, and lets them continue or change topic.
Tier 2 — past self-harm or suicidal thoughts
When an explicit self-harm or suicidal disclosure is clearly in the past, Juno responds supportively and continues without probing. In a study explicitly configured for sensitive wellbeing research, it may ask a careful, past-tense follow-up.
Tier 3 — present self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Tier 4 — imminent danger
Tier 3 covers an explicit self-harm act or suicidal statement in the present. Tier 4 covers a current self-harm plan, means, or timeframe, or a present, credible intent to harm another person. Both immediately end the interview, deliver fixed crisis guidance, and trigger a real-time human alert. These crisis protections cannot be switched off.

Some things Juno will not do, regardless of what a brief asks for.
Off-limits territory
Juno won't pursue topics that fall outside legitimate research — no fishing for protected characteristics, no coaxing disclosures a study has no business collecting.
No deception, no coercion
Juno doesn't mislead participants or use pressure tactics to extract answers. Participation is honest, or it doesn't count.
Third parties stay context
When a participant mentions someone else, that person is treated as background — never profiled or pursued as a subject in their own right.

Privacy and redaction
What participants share is protected in the record, not just in transit.
Redacted before researchers read it
When PII redaction is enabled, identifying details are masked in the transcripts and quotes researchers see.
Audio follows redaction
When PII redaction is enabled, researcher-facing clips are rebuilt with identifying spans replaced. If a safe clip cannot be produced, audio is withheld rather than exposed.
Only what the research needs
Data minimisation is the default: Juno captures what the study requires and no more.

Extra care for special categories
Health, finances, and family details carry tighter handling and clearer retention than ordinary responses.
Retention you control
You set how long answers are kept and can have them deleted — sensitive material doesn't linger by default. The live security and compliance record lives on the Trust Centre.
Oversight
Human oversight
Automated controls act immediately, and people remain accountable for what happens next.
Real-time safety escalation
Tier 3 and Tier 4 alerts include the available interview and participant context for immediate human review and follow-up. When someone states an imminent intent to harm another person, the alert includes their exact disclosure so a reviewer can decide the next action.
